Less than two weeks before Donald Trump is reinstated as President, Meta is abandoning its fact-checking program in favor of a crowdsourced model that emphasizes “free expression.” The shift marks a profound change in how the company moderates content on its platforms—and has sparked fierce debate over its implications for misinformation and hate speech online.

Meta, which operates Facebook, Instagram and Threads, had long funded fact-checking efforts to review content. But many Republicans chafed against those policies, arguing that they were disproportionately stifling right-wing thought. Newly revealed Sony patent applications show AI tech that would predict player inputs to reduce online lag and an accessory that would allow players to aim the PS5’s DualSense controller like a gun.

The AI patent application (spotted by tech4gamers) would use “a machine learning-based model or other system” to predict and execute player inputs before they are actually completed, thereby offsetting some online lag. The system would use a camera and interpret player movements to make predictions. Another similar system could use incomplete inputs to predict what a player’s next move would be.

The DualSense patent was filed in June, but made public in earlier in January (as spotted by GameRant). Players would hold the right “arm” of the DualSense, aiming it like a gun and using the space between the right bummer and trigger as a sight. The patent suggests that this accessory could be paired with others, like the PSVR2 headset.

This week, the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) announced the gross gaming revenue totals for Indian gaming facilities in the United States. The details were provided during the recent Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association’s Tradeshow and Conference. The revenues jumped to a record $39 billion for the fiscal year, a 40% increase from the previous year’s totals.

Details of the Report

The annual report details were based on independent audit reports from 510 gaming establishments operated by 243 tribes in 29 states on reservation land. The revenue totals were so high, they outdid the 2019 fiscal year by 13% and 2020 by 40%.

In a press release, the NIGC stated that gaming revenue for the 2021 fiscal year is the highest ever in the history of Indian gaming. All administrative regions have shown a positive increase from the previous fiscal year. The increase followed the industry’s greatest decrease which was created due to the pandemic and gaming venue closures.

“After discussing the performance of ArcheAge with XL Games at length, we have concluded that we’re no longer able to provide the MMORPG we envisioned,” publisher Kakao Games wrote in a closure announcement. “The declining number of active players means the game’s content is no longer accessible in the way it used to be, and the experience of it is different from what was originally intended. In light of this, we’ve made the difficult decision to terminate the live service of ArcheAge in Europe and North America.

Armored Core 6 was a triumph—it gave second wind to FromSoftware’s mecha franchise, brought new fans into the genre (myself included) and it let you gun down tanks as a 20ft-tall Pepsi Man, what more could you want? Co-op, that’s what.

Despite the fact that there’s several missions in the game with AI partners, there’s no online co-op—which is fair enough. Not only is the single-player experience already great, with some of FromSoftware’s best NG+ content yet, Armored Core 6’s mechs are so customizable I have no idea how you’d balance any mission around more than one of them. The Robot-Wars style PvP battles are a better use of the game’s online functionality.

I would describe myself as many things. Writer, long-haired moron, the most spectacular lover this side of the Milky Way. But one term I would also use to describe myself is: A musician. Not an exceptionally good one, I have to say, but I’ve been known to take a stringed instrument and throttle it to within an inch of its life for paying punters, and for my own enjoyment, too.

Which is why, when I found myself watching footage of a pair of robot arms playing the cello with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, I felt a range of competing emotions. On the one hand, it’s an impressive technical achievement, and one to be admired. On the other, I looked into the faces of the orchestra members sitting behind it, watching their beloved art form reduced down to a sequence of quite literally robotic motions, and felt a pang of existential dread and sympathy rolled into one.
